Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendation

Awarded to George Wirthmann.

Division 20 Commander Manfred Germann presents George Wirthmann with the Auxiliary Achievement Award. Auxiliarist Wirthmann is cited for superior performance of duty from September 2005 to March 2010 while serving as a Coast Guard Academy Partner.

During this period, Auxiliarist Wirthmann served as a credentialed member of this national network of volunteers, providing vital assistance recruiting talented Americans to the Coast Guard Corp of Cadets. Auxiliarist Wirthmann also served with distinction as a member of the Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) project staff, delivering outstanding logistical support to over 150 participants and 50 cadets during this flagship program.

As a result of Auxiliarist Wirthmann’s support, the Academy made significant progress towards increasing the size and qualifications of the applicant pool. During the last eight years, the senior inquiry pool tripled and the applicant pool doubled, allowing the Coast Guard to meet its stringent enrollment goals with greater certainty.  The diversity and academic profile of the freshman class have improved substantially, and retention increased by nearly ten points, improving awareness of and competition for Academy appointments. Auxiliarist Wirthmann gave freely of his time to represent the Academy at college fairs and congressional service academy events, interviewing candidates, presenting appointments, visiting high schools and referring leads to the Admissions Office.

As a result, the Academy Partnership has grown and flourished since inception, positioning the Academy to enjoy a sustainable flow of commissioned officer talent for years to come.  Auxiliarist Wirthmann served a vital role helping the Admissions Division achieve its vision: “To shape and enrich future Coast Guard leadership one cadet at a time.”  Auxiliarist Wirthmann’s diligence, perseverance, and devotion to duty are most heartily commended and in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Coast Guard and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Commander Carissa April of the United States Coast Guard, Sector New York presented Auxiliarist George Wirthmann with the 1st District, Southern Region, Sector New York Challenge Coin, awarded for his efforts in providing direct support for all Coast Guard Operations, including search and rescue, fisheries and aids to navigation maintenance.

Auxiliarist Wirthmann joined the Auxiliary in 2002 and travels from his hometown of New Paltz, NY to ten different counties for his recruitment efforts for the United States Coast Guard Academy and Auxiliary duties.

Kingston Flotilla Commander William Sakal presented Auxiliarist George Wirthmann with Sector New York Auxiliarist of the Year Award in Recognition of his Exemplary Service to Sector New York, 2009.

Auxiliarist Wirthmann is a past Flotilla Commander, Coast Guard Academy Admissions Partner, qualified VE – Vessel Examiner, APC – Administrative Procedures, and a FRPRINTTECH Fingerprint Technician.
